Australia’s ILBIJERRI Theatre Company brings Blood on the Dance Floor to Vancouver for North American Premiere

Blood on the Dance Floor | DanceHouse, SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs, and Talking Stick Festival present ILBIJERRI Theatre Company | SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts | February 6 – 9, 2019

In this North American premiere, provocative Indigenous Australian artist Jacob Boehme sheds light on the ongoing stigma, discrimination and silence around HIV/AIDS for Indigenous communities.

Rooted in Aboriginal Dance, theatre, and storytelling, this award-winning work, written and performed by Jacob Boehme, choreographed by Mariaa Randall, and directed by Isaacc Drandic, is based on the deeply personal experience of Boehme, a renowned dancer, writer, and choreographer from the Narangga and Kaurna nations of South Australia. Blood on the Dance Floor unapologetically shares Boehme’s emotionally honest story of gay, Blak, and poz identities; and explores the struggle, heartache, and enduring spirit of someone living at the intersection of Aboriginal, queer, and HIV-positive communities.

All three solos are skilfully woven together with voiceover by the artists to create a tapestry that encapsulates Laughlin through the eyes of each of his esteemed colleagues.

Chris Griffin: I’m Not Your Family, Guy Live Comedy Taping

Chris Griffin: I’m Not Your Family, Guy Live Comedy Taping | Biltmore Cabaret | October 18, 2018

JFL NorthWest is pleased to present Chris Griffin – the comedian, not the cartoon character – for two performances at The Biltmore Cabaret on Thursday, October 18 at 7:00pm and 9:30pm. This will be a live comedy taping. Tickets are on sale now and available online at https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/1746346 for the 7:00pm performance and https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/1746348 for the 9:30pm performance.

Calgary-born, Vancouver-based Chris Griffin has established himself as one of comedy’s most dynamic storytellers. Coming from modest beginnings, Griffin’s work ethic and sheer determination created a self-made comfortable living by his mid-twenties. At 29, he followed through with his lifelong dream of performing stand-up comedy. One year later, he won his hometown’s Great Canadian Laugh Off, leading him to set his academic degrees aside (BAs in English and Political Science), quit his stable job, sell his house, and hit the road to do what he loves best – drinking, making people laugh, and reclaiming his name after enduring over a decade of awful “Family Guy” jokes.

Vancouver International Flamenco Festival presents headliner Sara Calero

Vancouver International Flamenco Festival | Flamenco Rosario | September 21-29, 2018

The 2018 Vancouver International Flamenco Festival features Spain’s Sara Calero - Petisa Loca (Crazy Girl) along with an impressive lineup of local and international flamenco artists. The festival includes free workshops and ticketed performances at various Vancouver venues.

Sara Calero is one of the main current references in the renewal of both Spanish and flamenco dance. The company’s piece shares the diaspora diaries of a woman and all women as thousands of Spaniards were forced to emigrate between Europe and America in the mid-twentieth century. An emotive work, Petisa Loca asks the question: "Is there a place for oneself?" as it works through issues of fear, hope, uncertainty, and displacement in a new, unfamiliar world. Petisa Loca features dancer/choreographer Sara Calero, singer Loreto Arnaiz, guitarist José Almarcha, and the electronic music of The Lab (José Corredera and Miguel Lázaro).
