VIFF 2017: Lady Bird

With razor-sharp mother-daughter dialogue and a stunning performance from Saorise Ronan as Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson, this is a sharp-witted coming of age story set in 2002 Sacramento. Lady Bird is in her final year at a Catholic high school and dreaming of college on the East Coast. She yearns to escape the “Midwest of California” and her daily battle with her mother, but she eventually realizes that home is something you appreciate much more once you leave.

Rebels on Pointe – Bobbi Jo Hart

Bobbi Jo Hart’s intimate portrait of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, an all-male ballet company, allows us to see behind the scenes of their dance lives, but also shows us what daily life and family relationships are like for these dancers who are on tour most of the year. With a good amount of historical detail, views from critics, archival clips, and interviews with the current dancers and company administrators, Rebels on Pointe is an uplifting story of following your dreams and being proud of who you are.

VIFF 2017: Sweet Virginia

Three men play Texas Hold ‘Em in a bar after hours. A stone-faced man sits at a booth and demands the early bird special after being told that the bar is closed. He returns moments later and guns down all three men. The problem is, he was only supposed to kill one of those men. Filmed in Hope, BC, (standing in for small-town Alaska) this crime drama is a tension-filled film that opens with a bang and slow burns until a somewhat predictable end.

VIFF returns with a packed schedule and new programming

The 36th annual Vancouver International Film Festival is “expanding the frame” to include more international films, more special presentations and industry talks, and more interdisciplinary events from September 28 to October 13.

New this year is a whole day devoted to programming from Buffer Festival, a showcase of YouTube content. At VIFF, attendees can learn all about becoming a YouTube creator, watch exclusive YouTube premieres, and meet some of the creators in person.
