Cuba Vibra! | Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba | Massey Theatre | March 8, 2019

Vibrant colours; live music; and the rhythms and passion of Cuba. Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba fills the stage with dynamic energy and soulful music. Their enthusiasm is infectious, and the colourful, ever-changing costumes added to the effusive personalities on stage.

The three men and 14 women of the company performed a variety of fusion styles with hip hop, flamenco, mambo, rumba, contemporary, Afro-Cuban, and ballet influences. Some numbers leaned heavily to one dance style, but many were beautiful fusions of many forms into Alfonso’s own unique style.

Not only do these dancers have huge personalities, they have talent just as big. This was an extremely enjoyable show that included a wide variety of numbers from a 50s-inspired jive to a contemporary pas de deux. Through it all, the dancers seemed indefatigable.

Popular songs such as “Besame Mucho” were crowd pleasers, and there were many moments that had the audience clapping along. During one song we were asked to dance and clap, and everyone was more than happy to do so. From the moment the dancers took the stage until they danced off it, down the aisles, and out the door, they had the crowd immersed in their world.
